VESTAL, N.Y.- The Binghamton men's lacrosse team heads to Canisius for its final non-conference game of the 2015 season on Tuesday, April 14. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. faceoff at the Demske Sports Complex.
BU challenged #8/9 Albany in a 15-11 defeat on April 11, as freshman
Ben Kocis scored a career-high four goals. A
Johnny Maher goal tied the contest at 7 with 9:42 remaining in the third quarter before the Great Danes gained some breathing room. Albany's Lyle Thompson tied the NCAA career points record in the game, tallying seven points on the evening. The match saw 780 fans pour into the Bearcats Sports Complex, setting a BU men's lacrosse record.
Canisius (2-10) is coming off a 9-7 loss to Quinnipiac on April 11. The game was tied at 4 at halftime, but Quinnipiac pulled away with a 3-0 third period. Vince Gravino led the Golden Griffins with two goals and an assist. Sam Connors also scored twice in the contest.
A trio of seniors lead Binghamton's attack this season.
Tucker Nelson has a team-high 29 points (nine goals, 20 assists).
Paul O'Donnell has scored 19 goals and dished out eight assists, while
J.T. Hauck has 23 points (16 goals, 7 assists). Sophomore
Tanner Cosens has been one of the top goalies in the conference, allowing an America East-low 9.29 goals per game. His .521 save percentage is second in the league.
Tim Edwards paces a balanced Canisius offense with 13 goals and 12 assists. Billy Jacobbi has a team-leading 16 goals and Vince Gravino has recorded 12 scores on the year. Alex Govenettio has started all 12 matches in net, giving up 10.77 goals per game.
Coach
Scott Nelson's squad is one of the nation's best in clearing percentage. The Bearcats have successfully cleared on 88.8 percent of their attempts, good for eighth nationally and best in the America East. They also take care of the ball, committing just 13.2 turnovers per match, ranking 22
nd in the country and second in the conference.
The teams have met in each of the last four seasons, with BU winning three times. Binghamton took a 9-5 decision over the Griffins last year, as
Tyler Deluca posted a hat trick and Nelson put up a goal and three helpers. The Bearcats led, 6-5, after three periods and then tacked on three scores in the fourth to seal the victory.
