Softball splits AE doubleheader against UMass Lowell

Bearcats lose opener 8-6, rally to win nightcap 8-1

VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior catcher Lisa Cadogan homered twice and drove in six runs, highlighting the Binghamton softball team's split against UMass Lowell on Tuesday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex Softball Facility. The Bearcats (13-14, 4-3 AE) dropped the opener to the River Hawks (11-22, 1-7 AE) 8-6 but won the finale 8-1.

Cadogan, who finished the day 3-for-8, is now batting a team-best .400 with eight home runs and 33 RBI. Junior outfielder Sydney Harbaugh and freshman outfielder Jessica Rutherford each went 3-for-7 and also homered.

The Bearcats were behind 8-0 by the middle of the fourth inning of the first game but rallied for six runs in the bottom of the frame. Cadogan led off with a solo home run and Rutherford capped the inning with a two-run shot.

Marielle Handley, however, held the Bearcats scoreless over the final three innings, improving her record to 5-9. Sophomore pitcher Shelby Donhauser fell to 2-4 with the defeat.

In the second game, Harbaugh broke open a scoreless tie when she led off the bottom of the third inning with her fifth home run of the year. Three batters later, Cadogan drilled a three-run home run.

Rutherford tripled home a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it 6-0 Binghamton. She scored one batter later on a double by Cadogan.

The River Hawks got a run back in the top of the fifth inning but Cadogan had a RBI on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Junior pitcher Cara Martin went the distance, allowing one run on five hits and striking out a pair of batters to improve to 6-4 on the season. Lauren Ramirez took the loss in her first decision of the year.

Freshman second baseman Stephanie Bielec hit a team best .500 against UMass Lowell, going 3-for-6 with a double and a triple. Sophomore outfielder Gabby Bracchi and freshman designated hitter Sarah Miller each finished 2-for-6 (.333).

Binghamton will host Albany in a three-game America East Conference series this weekend. The two squads will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday followed by a single game at noon on Sunday.
