BALTIMORE, MD. – Freshman pitcher
Sarah Miller threw a four-hit shutout, pacing Binghamton (17-16, 8-5 AE) to a 4-0 win over UMBC (21-23, 7-5 AE) in an America East softball game on Sunday afternoon at the UMBC Softball Stadium. With the victory, the Bearcats sweep the three-game conference series and have now reeled off four straight victories.
Miller, who is now 7-6 on the season, struck out four batters and issued three walks to record the first complete-game shutout of her career. She finished strong, retiring the final eight batters of the game.
Offensively, the Bearcats gave Miller all the run support she'd need in the top of the first inning. Junior catcher
Lisa Cadogan singled home the first run and scored one batter later on a two-run home run by junior first baseman
Taylor Chaffee. It was Chaffee's second home run in as many games and sixth of the season.
Freshman outfielder
Jessica Rutherford, tacked on an insurance run, when she drilled a solo home run over the left field fence.
Jessica Holte was tagged with the loss, dropping her record to 13-10.
Cadogan, who went 2-for-3 on Sunday, led the Bearcats in batting during the three-game series against UMBC. She went 4-for-9 (.444) and drove in three runs. For the season, Cadogan continues to lead the Bearcats in batting (.418), home runs (eight) and RBI (40).
Sophomore outfielder
Gabby Bracchi hit .429 during the weekend (3-for-7) and scored three times. Rutherford finished 4-for-10.
Miller, meanwhile, finished the weekend 2-0 and allowed only one run in 12.0 innings for an ERA of 0.58.
Up next for the Bearcats is a Tuesday non-conference doubleheader at Cornell. Start time is 3:30 p.m.
