Softball sweeps AE doubleheader at Hartford

Bearcats win 10-2 and 8-0 to improve to 3-2 in conference play


WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Freshman designated hitter Tia Smith and sophomore third baseman Crysti Eichner each drove in five runs, leading Binghamton (12-11, 3-2 AE) to a sweep over Hartford (2-25, 0-5 AE) in an America East softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at the UH Softball Field. The Bearcats won the opener 10-2 in six innings and 8-0 in the finale.

Smith finished the day 4-for-5, scored three times and belted her first career home run. Eichner, meanwhile, was 3-for-7 as was junior outfielder Sydney Harbaugh. Junior catcher Lisa Cadogan was 2-for-6 and drove in three runs.

In the opener, Smith opened a three-run top of the first inning by drawing a bases-loaded walk. Eichner drove in the second run on a fielder's choice. Two batters later, senior shortstop Caytlin Friis drew another bases-loaded walk.

The Bearcats scored four more runs in the top of the fifth inning to go up 7-0. Eicher had a sacrifice fly and Cadogan had a RBI single during that frame.

Binghamton was able to finish off game by adding three more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Smith delivered the big blow with a two-run double. Hartford scored twice in the bottom of the frame but was unable to extend the game.

Sophomore pitcher Shelby Donhauser won her second straight decision, upping her record to 2-2. Kelsey Bird took the loss and is now 2-5.

Harbaugh scored the first run of the second game on a RBI single by junior first baseman Taylor Chaffee in the top of the first inning. Two innings later, Smith drilled a solo home run to make it 2-0.

The Bearcats scored three more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Smith drove home the first run on a sacrifice fly and Eichner followed with a two-run double.

One inning later, Cadogan singled in two more runs. Harbaugh then finished the scored with a RBI single in the top of the seventh inning.

Junior pitcher Cara Martin tossed the last four scoreless innings to improve to 5-4. The loss was tagged to Bianca Ross who is now 0-11.

Binghamton is scheduled to host Syracuse on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Bearcats Sports Complex Softball Facility.

NOTES: Cadogan now leads the team with a .426 batting average and 27 RBI. She also has a team-best six home runs … Harbaugh finished the first game with a pair of doubles. She is now hitting .384 with four home runs and 21 RBI.
