VESTAL, N.Y. - Host Binghamton registered five shots in overtime and rattled one off the crossbar before settling for a 0-0 draw with Canisius Friday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
The Bearcats had a handful of near-misses during the game, which livened up after halftime and turned into a physical, entertaining contest.
Binghamton had its final opportunity to produce the game-winner when sophomore midfielder
Valerie McNamara ripped a left-footer off the crossbar with 6:38 left in the second extra period. Less than three minutes earlier, McNamara's 28-yard direct kick sailed just over the bar.
"It's tough in overtime ... it doesn't matter how the rest of the game has gone because one mistake could cost you the game," head coach
Sarah McClellan said. "I thought our team did a good job staying alert and going for the win. We had quite a few opportunities around the box, where we were trying to stay balanced and get good shots. We just didn't have that final touch tonight."
Sophomore
Katie Hatziyianis wasn't tested too often as BU held a 16-5 shots advantage. But Hatziyianis did come out to block a scoring threat with 7:24 left in regulation.
"Canisius has some dangerous attackers and I felt we shut down their forwards really well tonight," McClellan said. "Getting the shutout is a real positive."
It will be short turnaround for BU, which hosts Lehigh at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Mountain Hawks have been idle since Tuesday.Â
