PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- The Binghamton volleyball team fell, 3-0, to Towson on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers won by scores of 25-23, 25-20, and 25-16 in the neutral site match, played at The Palestra.
Â
In the first set, kills by
Megan Burgess and
Bianca Anderson got the Bearcats out to an early 3-1 lead.
Sarah Ngo assisted on points by Burgess and
Kristella Morina to give BU a 6-2 advantage. After Towson (10-1) cut its deficit to 8-6, Binghamton went on a 4-0 spurt to regain control. A Tiger error started the run, and then
Kasey Muchnicki found Anderson for a kill. Ngo followed with assists to Burgess and Anderson, making it 12-6 and forcing a Towson timeout.
Â
The Tigers rallied, getting within a point, but a Morina kill made it 16-14. Towson made another run, taking a four-point advantage, but BU fought back, with its defense leading the way. Anderson and
Gabby Alicea teamed up for a block and then Burgess and Anderson put another stuff down. Ngo then hit
Erin Shultz for a kill, getting the Bearcats within 23-22. After a Tiger point, Burgess posted her fifth kill of the game. Towson answered with the clinching score next, though, gaining a 1-0 match lead.
Â
After going down 6-3 in the second frame, BU put together a 5-0 run to grab the lead. Shultz scored and Towson followed with an attack error. Burgess then served an ace. A pair of Tiger miscues made it 8-6 in the Bearcats' favor.
Â
Later in the game, Anderson scored and then she and Shultz tallied a block, giving Binghamton a 16-13 margin. A 9-0 Towson streak turned the set around, however, as a late Shultz kill was not enough to overcome the Tigers.
Â
BU, playing its fourth match in three days, looked to rally in the third set, and after trailing early, logged a 5-0 run to get back into the action. Ngo found Anderson and Shultz for kills, and after a Tiger error,
Bailey Walker assisted on another Shultz point. A Towson attack error got BU within a point, at 9-8. Anderson collected a pair of kills, but Towson was too much, eventually picking up the victory.
Â
Ngo dished out 20 assists and recorded nine digs. Shultz, Burgess, and Anderson each had seven kills, while Walker accumulated 18 digs.
Â
BU will play three matches at the Cornell Invitational next weekend, taking on Cornell, Loyola-Chicago, and Seton Hall September 18-19.
