ITHACA, N.Y.- The Binghamton volleyball rallied from an 0-2 deficit Saturday evening, but in the end, Seton Hall came away with a tight five-set win at the Cornell Invitational. The Bearcats also fell to Loyola-Chicago in three games earlier in the day.
Â
Against Seton Hall, BU fell by scores of 25-17, 25-14, 20-25, 22-25, and 15-12.
Â
Down 2-0 in the contest, BU played with much more confidence in the third set, as
Sarah Ngo hit
Erin Shultz and
Kristella Morina for kills in the early going. After the Pirates rallied, Ngo continued her solid play, finding Shultz and
Bianca Anderson for scores. Anderson and
Gabby Alicea teamed up for a block to give Binghamton a 7-5 advantage. A Ngo ace evened the set at 10. Kills by Alicea and Morina gave Binghamton the lead, but the Pirates rallied, going ahead, 15-13.
Â
The Bearcats answered with a 4-0 spurt, as Anderson scored and Shultz followed with a kill and a block. A Seton Hall error made it 17-15 in BU's favor. Ngo assisted on points by Shultz and Alicea to keep Binghamton up. Alicea and Morina then put down a block, giving BU a 20-17 advantage. Kills by Alicea and Morina put the Pirates on the brink, and an SHU attack error allowed Binghamton to extend the contest. BU hit .357 for the frame.
Â
Ngo was the catalyst in the fourth set, as she served out a 7-0 run to begin the frame. She posted a pair of assists and a kill in the burst, which gave BU control from the outset. After the Pirates got on the board, Ngo found
Kaelan Haag and Morina for points. Two Anderson kills made it 13-8, but SHU slowly got back into the game. Consecutive kills by Haag gave the Bearcats a 19-16 edge, but Seton Hall came back to tie it at 20.
Â
After an SHU miscue, Anderson and Ngo came up with a block. The Pirates scored, but Ngo found space for a kill and a 23-21 edge. The Pirates recorded an error and then a point to make it set point. Alicea put away the kill to end it and force a decisive fifth.
Â
Seton Hall scored first in the fifth, but Ngo assisted on a Haag kill to tie it. At the end of a long rally, Haag and Morina put down a block for an early lead. Morina followed with a kill. With the set even at 4, Ngo found Shultz for a point. Ngo and Anderson followed with a block for a 6-4 margin. Seton Hall scored two straight, but Ngo responded with assists to Anderson and Morina, giving BU an 8-6 lead at the switch.
Â
The Pirates evened the score again, but
Bailey Walker found Alicea for a kill and the lead. After an SHU score, Haag registered a kill. Seton Hall regained the lead, but a Pirate service error made it 11-all. Another Seton Hall miscue gave BU a 12-11 difference, but SHU came away with the next four points to close out the match.
Â
BU has now played in six five-game matches in 2015. Each of the Bearcats' win this season have been five-set decisions. It played in just four such contests last year.
Â
Morina and Anderson each put down block solos early in the first frame. Ngo followed with a pair of assists and a kill of her own, getting Binghamton within 12-7. Four Pirate errors allowed BU to hang around, but SHU eventually came away with the first-set victory.
Â
In the second game, Morina and Shultz combined for a block, followed by a Shultz kill for a 2-0 advantage. A Pirate service error gave the Bearcats a 5-4 edge a bit later, but Seton Hall gradually gained control. Ngo found Haag, Morina, and Anderson for late points, but it wasn't enough.
Â
Morina paced the Bearcats with 13.5 points. Alicea compiled 11 points and 11 digs, while Anderson put up 10.5 points. Ngo dished out 40 assists and handled nine digs. Walker totaled 17 digs in the back row.
Â
Earlier in the day, Loyola-Chicago won by scores of 25-22, 25-17, and 25-16. Anderson and
Megan Burgess led with 8.5 points apiece. Ngo posted 26 assists and Walker added 15 digs.
Following the event, Anderson was chosen for the all-tournament team. The junior tallied 28 points, collecting eight kills in each of the team's three outings. Anderson hit .354 on the weekend.
Â
