Flesch's Late Goal Leads to Tie for Men's Soccer Saturday

LOWELL, Mass.- Binghamton men's soccer scored with 27 seconds left in regulation and claimed a 1-1 tie at #19 UMass Lowell Saturday evening. Kevin Flesch's header allowed the Bearcats to tie at a soggy Cushing Field in the America East opener.

"Our guys were outstanding in all aspects tonight," said Coach Paul Marco. "They were competitive and I'm very proud of how we played. It may have only been 110 minutes, but we grew by leaps and bounds tonight."

The teams were even deep into the contest, with neither side converting the few opportunities that came up. Midway through the second half, Dario Jovanovski sent a ball ahead to Wuilito Fernandes, who fired a shot past a diving Alejandro Cubillo for a goal at the 72-minute mark.

Binghamton continued to work as time wound down, and in the final minute, it struck. Charlie Novoth earned several throw-ins on the right side, and eventually had a ball sent back to him near the sideline. He delivered a pass into the middle of the box, where Flesch elevated and headed the ball into the net, tying the match with 27 seconds remaining in the second half.

Overtime saw plenty of action, with each team nearly winning it. Cubillo posted a pair of saves in the extra time, keeping the River Hawks off the board.

In the first half, the teams were unable to create many offensive chances, combining for one shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes.

The result is Binghamton's first tie against a ranked opponent since October 26, 2013, when it tied seventh-ranked UMBC.

Binghamton (5-2-4, 0-0-1 AE) hosts Hartford in its America East home opener on Saturday, October 8. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
