Men’s Soccer Wins 1-0 at UMBC

Ovetsky scores in 80th minute as Bearcats stay unbeaten in AE play

BALTIMORE, MD. – Junior forward Ben Ovetsky scored in the 80th minute, leading Binghamton (6-2-5, 1-0-2 AE) to a 1-0 at UMBC  (4-4-3, 0-3-0 AE) in an America East men's soccer game on Wednesday night at the Retriever Soccer Park. With the win, the Bearats remain unbeaten in conference play and have not lost in their last five games.

Ovetsky, who is now tied for the team lead with four goals this season, took a chip pass from freshman midfielder Matty Flax and broke into the box. He then fired the ball into the lower left-hand corner of the net for his third game-winning goal of the year.

After a strong 30 minutes by the Bearcats to open the match, the Retrievers hit the crossbar in the final seconds before halftime. Although the final shot count was 11-6 UMBC, Binghamton allowed only one shot on goal during the match.

Despite their slow start in conference play, UMBC still came into the match with a RPI of No. 64, compared to Binghamton's No. 78. The victory gives the Bearcats their first win in Baltimore since its 3-1 triumph back in 2006.

"I thought tonight was our most complete match of the season," head coach Paul Marco said. "Especially against a very good opponent on the road. We came out great, defended well and finished the game on a fantastic goal by Ben."

Redshirt freshman Alejandro Cubillo now has five solo shutouts this season. The Bearcat starting backline of senior Zach Galluzzo, redshirt junior Charlie Novoth, sophomore Kevin Flesch and redshirt freshman Stephen McKenna have now shut out six opponents this season.

Binghamton, which came into the match ranked No. 10 in the NSCAA East Region Poll, returns home to face New Hampshire on Saturday at 7 p.m.

NOTES: In two of its three conference games so far this year, Binghamton has scored a goal in the final 10 minutes of regulation … Ovetsky is tied with sophomore forward Nikkos Psarras for the team lead in goals (four) and total points (nine). His three game-winning goals, meanwhile, leads the squad … redshirt freshman goalkeeper Chris Shutler posted the Bearcats' other shutout this year, a 1-0 win over Bucknell back on Sept. 27.
