Men’s Soccer Loses 2-1 in Overtime to New Hampshire

Wildcats net game-winning goal 1:56 into first sudden-death period

VESTAL, N.Y. – Chris Arling scored 1:56 into the first overtime period, leading New Hampshire (10-4-0, 2-2-0 AE) to a 2-1 win over Binghamton (6-3-5, 1-1-2 AE) in an America East men's soccer game on Saturday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The loss snapped the Bearcats' five-game unbeaten streak and was their first defeat at home this year.

Arling, who came into the match ranked sixth in the nation with 0.85 goals per game, took a pass from Chris Wingate and broke free into the box. He then fired the ball into the lower-left corner of the net for his 12th goal of the season.

Just a few minutes earlier, it appeared as if the Bearcats were on their way to the victory in regulation. Redshirt junior back Charlie Novoth converted a free kick in the 61st minute, putting the Bearcats up 1-0. It was his second goal of the season.

With just under a minute left in regulation, however, Binghamton was seeking to clear the ball from its own end of the field when the referee called a foul just outside the box. The clock was stopped and William Picoux made the ensuing free kick to deadlock the game at 1-1.

Play was wide open throughout the game, with the Bearcats holding a 17-15 shot advantage. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Alejandro Cubillo finished with six saves while Andrew Pesci of New Hampshire had five stops.

The Wildcats entered the match with a RPI of No. 54 and were ranked fifth in the NSCAA East Region Poll. Binghamton, meanwhile, had a RPI of No. 78 and were No. 10 in the same poll.

Up next for Binghamton is Vermont, which comes to the Bearcats Sports Complex on Oct. 22 for a 7 p.m. game.
