Volleyball Sweeps Albany

Sharp starts, strong finishes prove key in the win

Box Score ALBANY, N.Y.—The Binghamton volleyball team used big runs in games one and three, and came away with a 3-0 sweep at Albany tonight. The Bearcats won by scores of 25-23, 25-20, and 25-16 to improve to 4-3 in the America East. With the win the Bearcats snap Albany's ten-game winning streak, and deal the Great Danes their first conference loss of the season.

Sharp starts in all three sets paved the way for BU. Game one saw the Bearcats jump out to a 7-3 lead, before the Great Danes tied things up at seven. The two teams went back and forth from there: trading points until Albany used a 4-1 run to lead 17-13. The Bearcats battled back to tie the game four times late, finally breaking through with two straight points following a 23-23 score to win.

The Bearcats got up 7-3 again in game two and held off the Great Danes the whole way, never letting Albany within three points for the whole set. Albany pushed it to 24-20 late, but a Gaby Alicea kill sealed the deal heading into the break.

The Bearcats again jumped out to an early lead (4-1), but Albany battled back to tie it at eight. Faced with the possibility of losing the momentum, the Bearcats buckled down and rattled off nine straight points to take a 17-8 lead. Albany made a 5-1 run late to make it 23-16, but the Bearcats closed out the sweep with two straight points.

Lauren Kornmann led Binghamton with 17 kills, and also chipped in six digs and a block. Bianca Anderson had 11 kills and three blocks, and Erin Schultz contributed eight kills and 12 digs. Bailey Walker led the team with 16 digs, while Sarah Ngo tallied ten digs to go along with a team-high 35 assists.

The Bearcats will look to keep the hot hand next Friday, October 28, as they travel to UMass Lowell to take on the River Hawks.
