Volleyball sweeps Hartford for fourth straight win

Bearcats improve to 6-3 in AE with 25-18, 25-18, 25-16 victory

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Binghamton volleyball (12-11, 6-3 America East) produced its third straight three-game sweep, dispatching host Hartford (5-17, 2-7 AE), 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Hartford Volleyball Gym. The win, BU's fourth straight, came by scores of 25-18, 25-18, 25-16, and moved the Bearcats up a spot into third place in the conference standings, just a half-game out of second.

In the opening set, Hartford led 10-9 before Binghamton scored 11 of the next 12 points, three coming on kills by senior middle Bianca Anderson. When the run subsided, BU had a 20-11 cushion. The Hawks drew no closer than seven the rest of the way. Anderson wound up with five kills in the set.

In Set 2, Hartford again started strong, building a 6-4 lead before the Bearcats rattled off eight straight points to take the lead for good. Freshman outside hitter Lauren Kornmann had two kills during the key stretch. Binghamton led 15-8 before Hartford trimmed it to 17-14. But subsequent Hawks' service and attack errors stalled the hosts' momentum. Sophomore hitter Erin Shultz had back-to-back kills that gave BU a 21-15 margin and a few points later, Kornmann ended the game with a kill.

In the third set, BU held a slim 6-5 lead before scoring 11 of the next 14 points to pull away. Hartford struggled to a negative attack percentage in the set.

Kornmann wound up with a match-high 12 kills. Sophomore hitter Gaby Alicea had nine kills and four blocks. Junior setter Sarah Ngo chipped in 31 assists and nine digs.

The Bearcats, who have won 12 of their last 13 games, return home for a pair of key matches next weekend. Binghamton opens by hosting UMBC at 7 p.m. Friday at West Gym.
