Volleyball Travels for Pair of Key America East Contests

VESTAL, N.Y.- Binghamton volleyball travels to Stony Brook and UMBC for two America East matches this weekend. The Bearcats play at Stony Brook on Friday, October 7, at 7 p.m. and then head to UMBC on Sunday, October 9, for a 1 p.m. contest.
 
BU (8-8, 2-1 AE) won a pair of home matches last weekend, sweeping Hartford and then rallying to get by UMass Lowell, 3-2. On September 30, the Bearcats hit .625 in the first game, setting the tone for a three-game sweep of the Hawks. Sarah Ngo posted 29 assists, five blocks, and three aces in Binghamton's first America East win of the season.
 
Two days later, BU went down, 2-1, before coming back for a five-set win over UMass Lowell. Ngo put up 34 assists, 15 digs, and five kills, while Gaby Alicea scored 15 points.
 
Stony Brook has a 4-13 record, including an 0-2 America East mark. The Seawolves lost, 3-0, at New Hampshire on Sunday. McKyla Brooks led with 11 points on .444 hitting, while Morgan Kath tallied 27 assists and eight digs. In its conference debut, Stony Brook fell, 3-2, at UMBC on September 23.
 
UMBC is 10-4 overall and 1-1 in the league. The Retrievers beat Stony Brook in five sets before falling to New Hampshire, 3-0, on September 30. Claudia Lopez notched 25 assists and eight digs in the loss at UNH.
 
Binghamton leads the conference in aces per set (1.7), as Alicea has 24 to lead the team. Ngo is next with 20 aces, while Bailey Walker and Lauren Kornmann have combined for 30 this year. The Bearcats also have a balanced blocking attack, ranking second in the America East with 2.11 blocks per set. Bianca Anderson has 58 blocks and Kristella Morina has 47. Kornmann, Ngo, Alicea, and Erin Shultz each have at least 14 total blocks in 2016. Walker is averaging 4.58 digs per set, second-most in the league.
 
Among America East programs, Stony Brook stands second in team hitting percentage (.197) and assists (679) this season. Kath has dished out 566 assists, second-most in the conference.
 
The Retrievers pace the conference in opponent hitting percentage, holding foes to a .178 attack rate this season. Abbie Mirabella tops the America East with 4.19 kills per set and 4.71 points per set.
 
Binghamton and Stony Brook have split their last ten meetings, with the home team picking up the win in both matches last year. The Bearcats are also 5-5 in their last ten matchups with UMBC.
