Women's soccer beats Maine 2-1

Galvin scores game-winner in 80th minute; BU earns three crucial points in standings

VESTAL, N.Y. - Redshirt junior miefielder Michele Galvin notched a goal and an assist to lead Binghamton women's soccer (5-8-2, 1-4 America East) to a 2-1 win over visiting Maine (6-6, 2-3 AE) Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

Galvin scored the game-winning goal directly off a corner kick in the 80th minute, snapping a 1-1 tie. She took an inswinger from the left corner spot and curled it over the keeper's head and into the far netting for her second goal of the season.

The goal came just 2:38 after Maine had tied it when Kate Evans outraced BU's back line and junior keeper Katie Hatziyianis to a thru ball and as three players collided, Evans touched the ball and it rolled into the unoccupied net to make it 1-1.

"I'm proud of the team," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We've been on a tough run where we weren't able to put the ball in the back of the net and weren't able to finish games even though we had some good performances. But we played with quality and were able to score today. It was blue collar stuff ... getting in for tackles, winning balls in the air, creating in the final third. They deserved this win ... actually deserved this moment a little earlier but it's nice that it came through today."

Binghamton opened the scoring late in the first half (38th minute) when freshman midfielder Rachel Parsons headed in a Galvin corner kick for her first collegiate goal. After freshman midfielder Ryan Reilly did some good work down the right flank to draw the corner, Galvin sent the kick from the right to the six-yard box, where Parsons drove a strong header to the far corner. A Black Bears defender tried to clear it but the ball crossed the line for a 1-0 BU lead.

Playing against a strong wind in the first half, Binghamton controlled play and registered eight shots, including two from Reilly, whose determined work on the right side produced two 1-on-1 opportunities which just missed.

Hatziyianis needed to make just four saves but she picked off several dangerous through balls and denied Maine on each of its five corner kicks. She also denied a Maine breakaway in the game's very first minute that would've given the Black Bears early momentum.

The Bearcats held a 15-8 shots advantage and with several late corners, wound up with a season-high 11 kicks from the flag.

Binghamton is idle until hosting UMass Lowell at 1 p.m. next Sunday. Before the game, BU will honor its eight seniors.
