JAMAICA, N.Y. -- The Binghamton men's basketball team (1-1) was defeated 77-61 at BIG EAST opponent St. John's (2-0) on Monday evening. The game was aired regionally on FS1.
Redshirt sophomore guard
J.C. Show led the Bearcats with 12 points, reaching double figures in scoring for the second game in a row. He also posted five rebounds and a pair of assists.
The rest of the scoring was balanced for the Bearcats.
Marlon Beck and
Fard Muhammad each finished with nine points while
Yosef Yacob and
Bobby Ahearn both added eight points.
The Bearcats came out strong, taking a 10-7 lead on a three-point field goal by Show with 16:20 left in the first half. From there, however, the Red Storm scored 11 unanswered points to go up 18-10 with 11:01 left before the break.
Play was even for the rest of the first half as St. John's headed to the locker room with a 39-32 advantage.
Binghamton clawed to within 41-37 on a three pointer by Beck with 18:43 left in regulation. The Bearcats pulled to within four points again when a jumper by Show made the score 43-39 at the 16:23 mark.
At that point, however, St. John's got the separation it needed with a 15-0 run to go up 58-39 with 12:08 left to go.
"We played really hard," head coach
Tommy Dempsey said. "I thought we did a lot of good things. There are some things that we are building on. We are definitely getting better."
Marcus Lovett of the Red Storm led all scorers with 23 points while Shamorie Ponds added 21 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Binghamton returns home to face Central Connecticut State on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
