VESTAL, N.Y. - Redshirt sophomore guard
J.C. Show tied school records with eight three-pointers and 34 points and his three from the top of the key with 22 seconds left lifted Binghamton men's basketball (2-1) to a 72-70 win over Central Connecticut State (1-2) Wednesday night at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center.
Neither team led by more than seven in the second half of a see-saw game. The visiting Blue Devils turned a steal into a layup with 37 seconds left to grab a 70-69 lead. But Show took a handoff on the other end of the floor and with the CCSU defense sagged off slightly, stepped into a 21-foot jumper that swished in for the game-winner. The visitors had a baseline jumper to tie it with four seconds left by junior forward
Bobby Ahearn contested it and grabbed the defensive rebound to seal the win.
Show scored 24 of his points after halftime, when BU shot 60 percent to overcome a five-point deficit. For the game, Show shot 12-of-16 from the floor, including 8-of-11 from three-point range. He tied school records for points, three-pointers and field goals in a game (Division I era). He went 6-of-8 from beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes, including two crucial 3s in the final 1:19. Show is averaging 23.0 points on 57 percent shooting this season.
Ahearn added a career-high 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting and drilled the first two three-pointers of his collegiate career. He also drew two charges and grabbed five boards in 23 minutes.
"It was a gutty win," head coach
Tommy Dempsey said. "We struggled through the first half and never found a rhythm. Central was playing well and we had to battle all the way. JC (Show)Â made a lot of big shots down the stretch and we found a lot of balance with Bobby on the inside. That good inside-outside mix got us going tonight."
Also contributing was senior guard
John Rinaldi, who logged 18 minutes - all in the second half - and was a key distributor into the post to go with his trademark defensive intensity.
The Bearcats next travel to Virginia for a tough test at VCU on Friday night.
