Women’s Basketball Wins 61-48 at Penn

Watkins and Sina combine for 43 points in victory over Ivy League champions

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Junior guard Imani Watkins poured in 26 points and redshirt sophomore guard Jasmine Sina added 17 points, powering Binghamton (1-2) to a 61-48 win over Penn (0-2) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Wednesday night at the Palestra. The victory came against the defending Ivy League champion Quakers, who were coming off a close loss to Duke on Sunday.

Watkins, who has now reached the 20-point mark twice in three games this season, sank five three-point field goals against the Quakers. In addition, she had eight rebounds, three assists, a block and five steals.

Sina, meanwhile, drained four three-point field goals of her own. In the past two games, she has averaged 16.5 points per game.

"Tonight was a total team effort," head coach Linda Cimino said. "Imani and Jasmine shot lights out and we played very smart as a team. Penn is the best team in the Ivy League and (coach) Mike McLaughlin is a class act who runs a great program. We did very well tonight and we know that we can compete with anyone on our schedule."

Watkins keyed a 12-0 run that gave the Bearcats a 15-6 lead with 1:04 left in the first period. She had eight of her points during that stretch.

The Quakers pulled to within 23-17 on a layup by Michelle Nwodeki with 7:21 left in the second period. Binghamton, however, answered by scoring the next 11 points to take a 34-17 lead with 2:02 left until halftime. Sina led the way with five points during that span.

Up 34-22 at the break, the Bearcats went on a 9-2 blitz in the opening 4:26 of the third period to go up 43-24.

From there, the Bearcats maintained at least a 13-point lead the rest of the game.

Freshman guard Kai Moon finished with six points, 10 rebounds, a pair of assists and a career-high five steals.

Nwokedi led the Quakers with 17 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Sydney Stipanovich added 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Binghamton continues to take care of the basketball. Against Penn, it finished with only 11 turnovers. In three games, the Bearcats have just 29 miscues.

Defensively, the Bearcats came up with 16 steals, its highest total since also recording 16 steals against UMass on Dec. 11, 2010.

With 966 career points, Watkins moves into 16th place all time in Binghamton program history. Against Penn, she surpassed Alicia Koppenhoefer (1994-98), who scored 954 points during her career.

Watkins now has 17 career games with at least 20 points. She is now averaging a career-high 21.0 points per game this season.

Binghamton heads to Providence on Saturday for a 4 p.m. game.
