Volleyball defeats Stony Brook 3-1

Bearcats honor seniors in celebratory fashion

VESTAL, N.Y.- Binghamton volleyball (13-12, 7-4 AE) honored its seniors in fine fashion with a 3-1 win over visiting Stony Brook (6-19, 2-8 AE) Friday night at West Gym. The victory was the team's fourth in its last five matches and kept BU within striking range of second place with one regular season match remaining
.
After a see-saw start to the first set, Stony Brook took an 8-4 lead. But Binghamton went on a 17-6 run to build a 21-14 cushion. Sophomore outside hitter Erin Shultz put the game away with a set-point kill off a feed from junior setter Sarah Ngo. The Bearcats outhit Stony Brook .429 to .189.

Keeping their momentum, the Bearcats took an early 3-1 lead in the second set. From there, the two teams traded points until another kill from Shultz pushed Binghamton ahead 15-12. Stony Brook responded, however, and scored four straight points to tie it up before taking the lead. Back-to-back kills by freshman outside hitter Lauren Kornmann lifted BU into a 19-19 tie. A BU attack error, however, turned the lead back over to the Seawolvesgiving them the edge for the second set.

Binghamton grabbed the match lead again with a win in the third set. Back-to-back kills by sophomore outside hitter Gaby Alicea gave the Bearcats the lead and four additional kills by Kornmann surged them to the finish line. Binghamton hit a scorching .417 in the set.

Keeping Stony Brook at a comfortable distance, the Bearcats held a 23-17 lead in the fourth set. Unfortunately, back to back attack errors allowed the Seawolves to tighten the gap and take a 27-26 lead. Facing match point, a huge kill by Alicea brought the Bearcats back to a 27-27 tie. Kills by Shultz and junior middle Lexi LaGoy earned them the set and the dramatic match win.

Kornmann finished the night with 19 kills and 6 blocks. Ngo racked up 46 assists and 12 digs, while senior libero Bailey Walker had 18 digs.

The Bearcats travel to New Hampshire next Sunday to face the Wildcats in the regular season finale for both teams. The America East tournament then begins on Nov. 18.
