Men's basketball late rally stuns St. Francis 73-70

Yacob steal and 2 FT with 0:15 left, Ahearn defensive charge, Show pair of FT seals win

LORETTO, Pa. - Down a point with 15 seconds left, redshirt junior guard Yosef Yacob stole the ball at midcourt and his subsequent free throws steered Binghamton men's basketball (6-4) to a 73-70 comeback win over St. Francis (3-4) Saturday night at DeGol Arena. After Yacob's heroics gave BU the lead, the Bearcats added two more free throws to complete a rally from 15 points down in the second half.

The Bearcats shot 62 percent but trailed by double figures in the second half before Yacob, redshirt sophomore guard J.C. Show (15 pts.) and junior forward Bobby Ahearn (19 pts.) keyed the rally. Ahearn put the team (and too-eager defenders) on his back with 15 second-half points and then provided the big defensive play when the Red Flash were looking for the game-winner in the final seconds. After Yacob's theft and foul shots gave BU a 71-70 lead, St. Francis came down for a potential game-winning shot. But when Red Flash guard Isaiah Blackmon drove the right side of the lane and beat him to the spot and absorbed the charge. Show hit two free throws with 4.4 seconds left to finish out the scoring. Earlier, Show drilled a big three with 35 seconds left that pulled BU to within one, 70-69.

Binghamton trailed 56-41 with 11:07 remaining before Ahearn went to work. He displayed an array of low post moves that had Red Flash defenders grasping air in vain. He wound up with 19 points for the second straight game on 8-of-11 shooting. Show scored 10 of his 15 points in the first half and then added his final five points in the critical final 35 seconds. Yacob wound up with 12 points and two steals, including the clinching theft. Sophomore guard Timmy Rose shook off an illness and produced eight points, four assists and two steals. Senior forward John Rinaldi played 15 second-half minutes and his six rebounds, steal and assist barely begin to define his strong presence.

St. Francis ended the first half with an 18-0 run to turn a nine-point BU lead into a nine-point host lead. But midway through the second half the Bearcats turned it around to post their second straight win.

The Bearcats head to Hamilton on Wednesday to face Colgate. Tip is 7 p.m. from Cotterell Court.
