HAMILTON, N.Y. - Binghamton men's basketball (7-4) opened the game with a 22-8 run and then used a 27-9 second-half run to pull away in a 73-64 road win at Colgate (2-8) Wednesday night at Cotterell Court. The Bearcats shot 53 percent and won their third straight game.
Thanks to the big early run, BU led 35-26 at the break. But the host Raiders opened the second half with a 9-2 run and trailed by just two, 37-35, with 16:49 left. Sophomore center
Thomas Bruce converted buckets on back-to-back possessions, however, to begin a dominating 27-9 run that solidified the Bearcats' lead. Junior forward
Willie Rodriguez and redshirt junior guard
Yosef Yacob tallied six points apiece during the run.Â
Colgate trimmed a 20-point deficit to seven, 67-60, with 1:05 left before BU sank 6-of-8 free throws in the final 1:02 to seal the win. Redshirt sophomore guard
J.C. Show made five of those foul shots and wound up with a team-high 14 points.Â
After missing seven games with an injury, Rodriguez celebrated his return to the floor with eight points, five rebounds and three blocks in 13 minutes. Â
Yacob hit 4-of-5 three-pointers en route to 13 points (10 in second half). Bruce wound up with nine points.
"We have a good vibe going with our team right now," head coach
Tommy Dempsey said. "I thought we shot the ball well tonight. We held them to 4-of-16 three-point shooting ... we guarded the arc very hard. We weren't perfect on offense but we hustled and got it done."
Binghamton returns home to host Loyola at 2 p.m., following the women's game vs. Columbia.Â
