Softball splits pair of games in Day Two of Mary Nutter Classic

Bearcats lose 12-5 to Arkansas, beat Loyola Marymount 9-8

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Senior catcher Taylor Chaffee went 4-for-6 with three RBI while sophomore third baseman Kate Richard and sophomore outfielder Jessica Rutherford each drove in a pair of runs, leading Binghamton to a split in a pair of games in the second day of the Mary Nutter Softball Classic. The Bearcats lost 12-5 to Arkansas (4-4) in the opener but defeated Loyola Marymount (4-4) 9-8 in the nightcap.

For the second day in a row, the Bearcats won a 9-8 game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Richard singled home freshman pinch runner Allison Pritchard with two outs to clinch the victory. The Bearcats had been down 8-7 in the bottom of the sixth inning before Rutherford tied the game with a RBI double.

Earlier in the game, Richard belted a solo home run to deadlock the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Chaffee doubled home two runs in the next inning, putting Binghamton up 7-5.

Loyola Marymount  came back with three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take an 8-7 lead. That set the stage for the Bearcats to record their second come-from-behind win in as many days.

Sophomore pitcher Sarah Miller raised her record to 1-2 while Rachel Farrington fell to 2-2.

Chaffee finished a perfect 3-for-3 in the win and drove in two of her runs.

Earlier in the day, Arkansas clubbed three home runs and pounded out 11 hits against the Bearcats. The Razorbacks scored in six of the seven innings.

Rutherford and senior outfielder Sydney Harbaugh each scored twice for the Bearcats.

Miller was tagged with the loss while Grace Moll raised her record to 3-3.

Rutherford, Chaffee, senior first baseman Lisa Cadogan and sophomore shortstop Crysti Eichner all hit safely in both games.

Binghamton concludes play at the Mary Nutter Classic with a 12:30 p.m. EST game on Sunday against Utah Valley State.
