Baseball falls at UNC Greensboro 5-2

BU puts runners on in seven of nine innings but strikes out 15 times in road defeat

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Host UNC Greensboro hit a two-out, two-run single in the sixth inning to stretch a 3-2 lead and the Spartans (5-1) held off Binghamton baseball (1-5) 5-2 in the second game of a weekend series Saturday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Complex.

The Bearcats put runners on base in all but two innings but were limited to five hits and struck out 15 times against a pair of UNCG pitchers.

For the second straight day, the Spartans scored in the first inning to take a quick lead. Binghamton tied it 1-1 on an RBI double by sophomore shortstop Paul Rufo in the second inning. But UNCG reclaimed the lead for good with a two-run triple in the fourth. The Bearcats got one run back in the fifth on a two-out, RBI double by senior second baseman Reed Gamache. But the hosts padded their cushion with two runs on two hits and a walk in the sixth.

A day after collecting 11 hits in a 10-9 loss, BU had no players with more than a hit on Saturday and the defense committed a season-high three errors.

Senior starter Rob Hardy (L, 0-1) went 5.0 innings and allowed five runs on six hits. Sophomores Nick Wegmann (1.1 IP) and Joe Orlando (1.2 IP) kept UNCG off the board in the final 2+ innings.

Junior Jake Cryts (0-0, 5.06) takes the mound in the series final at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
