Baseball loses at Delaware 13-2

BU gives up 9 runs in sixth inning, drops series opener; Teams play twinbill on Saturday

NEWARK, Del. - Host Delaware (8-4) broke open a close game with a nine-run sixth inning and the Blue Hens rolled over Binghamton baseball (2-9) 13-2 Friday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium. The teams will continue their four-game set with a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday.

Binghamton got on the board with a run in the third inning and trailed 4-1 before Delaware exploded for the nine-spot in the bottom of the sixth. The Bearcats added a single run in the ninth to finish the scoring.

Down 1-0, BU tied the game in the third inning. Sophomore shortstop Paul Rufo led off with a single and went to third on a 1-out double from sophomore center fielder CJ Krowiak. Senior third baseman David Schanz then plated Rufo with a sacrifice fly to center.

The Blue Hens scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and added another in the fifth inning before the decisive sixth, when they hit a grand slam, two-run home run and two-run double to plate nine runs on seven hits.

In the ninth inning, BU put its second run on the scoreboard. Sophomore second baseman Luke Tevlin led off with a single, sophomore first baseman Nick Wegmann walked and sophomore DH Pat Britt singled to load the bases. Freshman left fielder Sean Trenholm then recorded his first collegiate RBI with a groundout to first.

Senior starter Rob Hardy (L, 0-2) went 4.1 innings and allowed four runs. He struck out five. Two BU relievers gave up the remaining nine runs.

Junior Jake Cryts (Game 2) and senior Mike Bunal (Game 3) get the start tomorrow afternoon.
