Baseball edged by Delaware 5-4

Wloczewski pitches 5.0 strong innings but hosts rally with four runs in final two frames

NEWARK, Del. - Host Delaware rallied with two runs in the seventh and two more tiebreaking runs in the eighth and the Blue Hens (11-4) took the series finale 5-4 over Binghamton (2-12) Sunday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

The loss overshadowed a strong pitching performance from sophomore Jacob Wloczewski, who went 5.0 innings in his season debut. Wloczewski scattered six hits and one run and left the game with a 3-1 lead.

Delaware plated two runs on four hits in the seventh inning and then snapped a 3-3 tie with two more runs on three hits in the eighth. Binghamton got one run back in the top of the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly by sophomore shortstop Paul Rufo and had the tying run on first base when a fly out ended the game.

Senior third baseman David Schanz raised his season average to .351 with a 2-for-4, RBI effort. Schanz delivered an RBI double in the third inning, when BU shook off a 1-0 deficit with three runs. After his run-scoring double, senior second baseman Reed Gamache hit a sacrifice fly and then Schanz scored on a wild pitch to extend BU's lead to 3-1.

Junior catcher Eddie Posavec went 2-for-4.

Binghamton plays a pair of doubleheaders next weekend at Penn, beginning with a noon start on Saturday.
