McKeever Advances to Friday at NCAA Wrestling Championships

(11 p.m.)
NEW YORK, N.Y.- Jack McKeever of the Binghamton wrestling team advanced to the second day of the 2016 NCAA Championships, winning his consolation match Thursday to move on to Friday's action at Madison Square Garden. Steve Schneider dropped both of his bouts Thursday, as his season came to a close.

McKeever, a 174-pound senior, bounced back from his first contest Thursday. In the nightcap, McKeever faced Harvard's Josef Johnson. Johnson earned a takedown, but McKeever escaped to halve the margin. The Brookfield, Connecticut, native then escaped to open the second period, tying the score at 2. In the third frame, McKeever came up with a terrific takedown, recording two points and giving himself enough separation to win the bout.

McKeever will next face #15 Brian Harvey of Army in the consolation second round Friday morning.

Schneider, a 184-pounder, tallied an early escape for a 1-0 advantage in his match with North Carolina's Alex Utley. In the second frame, Utley collected a takedown, but Schneider quickly escaped, tying the match at 2. Utley notched his own escape to start the third, forcing Schneider to scramble. The sophomore was unable to come up with the go-ahead points and Utley advanced.

Competition resumes Friday at 11 a.m. at Madison Square Garden.

(4 p.m.)
NEW YORK, N.Y.- The Binghamton wrestling team took a pair of decision losses in the first session of the 2016 NCAA Championships Thursday afternoon. Jack McKeever and Steve Schneider both fell in the first round at Madison Square Garden, dropping each into the consolation bracket Thursday evening.

McKeever, a 174-pound senior, took on #16 Micah Barnes of Nebraska. The two grappled to a scoreless first frame, but Barnes escaped early in the second. He followed with a takedown for a 3-0 margin. With riding time, Barnes earned a 4-0 decision to send McKeever to the consolation bracket.

Schneider faced Navy's Mathew Miller, the ninth seed at 184 pounds. Neither competitor could score in the first period. Schneider chose to go down to open the second and he quickly escaped from Miller, grabbing a 1-0 advantage. Miller posted a takedown late in the frame for a 2-1 edge. The senior followed with another takedown in the third, claiming a 6-1 win.

McKeever, a native of Brookfield, Connecticut, will meet Harvard's Josef Johnson in a consolation bout later Thursday. The two met at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships two weeks ago, with Johnson pulling out a 6-4 win in the second sudden victory period. Johnson dropped a 10-2 major decision to #1 Bo Nickal of Penn State Thursday.

Schneider will take on Alex Utley of North Carolina in a consolation contest Thursday night. The pair competed on November 15, with Schneider posting a 4-1 decision at the Northeast Duals. Utley fell, 8-5, to #8 Nolan Body of Oklahoma State earlier Thursday.
