ORONO, Maine - Binghamton baseball used two dominating pitching performances and 21 hits in a twinbill sweep of Maine Saturday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond. The Bearcats (6-14, 2-0 America East) won 6-1 and 8-1 in the conference openers for both teams. Binghamton pitchers limited Maine (5-17, 0-2 AE) to two runs on nine hits over 16 innings.Â
In Game 1, junior
Jake Cryts (W, 1-3) allowed just three hits in seven scoreless frames and BU plated six runs in the fifth inning. Cryts struck out seven before yielding to sophomore
Dylan Stock, who went the final two innings.Â
Junior first baseman
Brendan Skidmore went 2-for-3 with two RBI and sophomore center fielder
CJ Krowiak went 3-for-5.Â
In the decisive fifth, BU batted around and used five hits to tally six runs. Skidmore hit a two-run single and senior third baseman
David Schanz and sophomore shortstop
Paul Rufo added RBI singles. Sophomore DH
Pat Britt brought home a run on a ground ball and BU's other run came in on a wild pitch.
In the nightcap, senior
Mike Bunal delivered his second-straight dominant performance. Bunal (W, 1-3) struck out a career-high tying 10 in a complete-game showing. He allowed only one run on four hits. In Bunal's last two starts (15 IP), he has allowed one run and has mowed down 20.
The Bearcats scored one run in the third, three in the fifth, two in the sixth and two in the seventh. Maine snapped Bunal's shutout with a solo home run in its last at-bat.
Senior second baseman
Reed Gamache and Krowiak had two hits and an RBI each and Rufo added two hits.Â
In the third, junior left fielder
Darian Herncane got things started with a 1-out solo home run - his team-best fourth of the season. Two innings later, Skidmore ripped a two-run shot - his fourth of the season. In the seventh, sophomore DH
Jason Agresti got into the act with a two-run homer of his own.Â
Binghamton's defense turned two double plays in support of Bunal.Â
The teams will wrap up the three-game set with a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Sophomore
Jacob Wloczewski (1-0, 0.82 ERA) gets the start.
