ORONO, Maine - Binghamton baseball (7-14, 3-0 America East) cashed in on another stellar pitching performance and pushed past host Maine (5-18, 0-3 AE) 2-0 in 12 innings Sunday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond. With the win, BU completed a three-game sweep of the Black Bears and stayed unbeaten in conference play. The Bearcats have now won four in a row and five of their last six.
The teams were scoreless after 11 innings before BU broke through in the top of the 12th. Junior left fielder
Eddie Posavec bunted to open the frame and advanced to second when the Maine pitcher threw errantly to first. Sophomore catcher
Jason Agresti then sacrificed Posavec to third. Sophomore DH
Pat Britt walked, putting runners on first and third with one out. With sophomore shortstop
Paul Rufo at the plate, BU executed a squeeze bunt and Rufo dropped it down perfectly, scoring Posavec with the go-ahead run. Still with one out after another error, sophomore right fielder
Chris McGee dropped down another squeeze bunt, scoring pinch runner
Daniel Franchi from third with the second run.
Senior reliever
Rob Hardy, who replaced starter
Jacob Wloczewski in the eighth, got the win after setting down Maine in the final frame. After allowing a one-out single, Hardy got a fly out and infield groundout to end it. He went 5.0 scoreless innings and scattered three hits. Earlier, Wloczewski stifled Maine through 7.0 scoreless frames. He gave up just two hits, lowering his season ERA to 0.50 in 18 innings.Â
The Bearcats were outhit 5-3. Sophomore center fielder
CJ Krowiak, senior second baseman
Reed Gamache and Posavec had a hit apiece.
Agresti aided his pitchers by throwing out Maine baserunners in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. He has thrown out half of the baserunners attempting to steal on him this season (8-of-16).Â
In the series, BU pitchers held a 0.64 ERA. In the team's last six games, the unit has allowed just five runs (0.83 ERA).
NOTESThis marks the first time in Binghamton's 15-year America East history that it swept a series from Maine in Orono ... this is the first time BU has started 3-0 in America East play since 2011.
