Taylor Chaffee all drove in four runs, powering Binghamton (11-9, 2-0 AE) to a sweep over UMass Lowell (4-21, 0-2 AE) in an America East softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at River View Field. The Bearcats won the opener 16-1 in six innings and recorded a 5-0 shutout in the second game.
Harbaugh, who drove in all of her runs in the first game, finished the day 6-for-9 (.667) with two doubles and a triple. She also set her career high with four hits in the opener.
Rutherford was 4-for-7 during the afternoon and scored three times. She drove in three of her runs in the first game.
Chaffee, meanwhile, went 5-for-9 with two home runs, both of which came in the second game. She now has three career games in which she has homered twice.
Other offensive standouts for Binghamton included junior outfielder
Gabby Bracchi, who was 4-for 8, and sophomore second baseman
Stephanie Bielec, who went 4-for-7 and scored four times.
On the mound, the Bearcats held the River Hawks scoreless over the final 12 innings of the day. Senior pitcher
Cara Martin tossed her first career complete-game shutout in the nightcap.
"I thought we did a good job of not giving them any extra opportunities or limiting any extra bases on defense," head coach
Michelle Burrell said. "Offensively, we put together good, quality at-bats in both games."
It was a 10-run outburst in the top of the sixth inning that blew the first game open. Heading into the frame, the Bearcats were ahead 6-1. Harbaugh led the way with a two-run double while Rutherford singled home another two runs. The River Hawks, meanwhile, prolonged the inning by committing a pair of errors.
Earlier in the game, Harbaugh doubled home a run in the top of the first inning and had a RBI single in the top of the fifth inning. Rutherford's other RBI came courtesy of a bases-loaded walk in the top of the third inning.
Sophomore pitcher
Sarah Miller improved to 6-5 with the win. Kaysee Talick took the loss, dropping her record to 1-7.
Senior designated hitter Griffin McIver went 2-for-3 in the opener with a home run to lead off the top of the third inning.
After two scoreless innings of the second game, Bielec opened the top of the third inning with a triple. She scored one batter latter when Bracchi hit into a fielder's choice.
Chaffee led off the top of the sixth inning with her first home run of the season, padding the lead to 2-0.
In the top of the seventh inning, Binghamton tacked on three more runs. Harbaugh led off with a triple and was singled home by Rutherford. Two batters later, Chaffee belted a two run homer.
Martin, meanwhile, allowed eight hits but issued only one walk and struck out five batters to improve to 3-2. Sydney Wash, who came into the game ranked second in the America East with a 2.86 ERA, fell to 2-7 with the loss.
Binghamton and UMass Lowell conclude their weekend series with a single game at noon on Sunday.
NOTES: Chaffee's previous two-home run games came against UMBC (April 6, 2014) and Hartford (April 20, 2014) … Chaffee and McIver each have two home runs so far this season.
