Softball Sweeps Doubleheader At Central Connecticut State 15-8 and 10-7

Bearcats extend winning streak to season-high six games

NEW BRITAN, Conn. --Senior designated player Griffin McIver homered twice and drove in six runs, powering Binghamton (14-9) to a sweep over Central Connecticut State (8-15-1) in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at CCSU Softball Field. The Bearcats won the opener 15-8 and the nightcap 10-7 to extend their winning streak to a season-high six games.

McIver, who finished the day 4-for-8 and scored five times, hit both of her home runs and had a career-best five RBI in the second game. It marks the first time she has homered twice in a game and gives her four home runs in the past six games. McIver now has a team-best five home runs this year.

Sophomore third baseman Kate Richard hit a team-best .750 during the doubleheader (6-for-8), homered and knocked in five runs. Junior shortstop Crysti Eichner went 4-for-8 with a home run and four RBI.

Sophomore outfielder Jessica Rutherford was 4-for-9 (.444) with three RBI. In the process, she extended her hitting streak to a team-high and career-best 10 games. For the season, Rutherford is batting a team-best .457.

In the first game against the Blue Devils, Binghamton blew the game open with five runs in the second, third and fourth innings respectively to take a 15-1 lead.

Eichner delivered the big blow of the second inning with a three-run homer. Senior outfielder Sydney Harbaugh led the way in the third inning with a three-run home run while Richard drilled a two-run double in the fourth inning.

The Bearcats, however, were unable to shorten the game as Central Connecticut plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and five more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Sophomore pitcher Sarah Miller improved to 7-5 with the win. She allowed one run in 5.2 innings and struck out seven batters. Alex Canasas was tagged with the loss, dropping her record to 3-9.

Down 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning of the nightcap, the Bearcats got back-to-back home runs by McIver and Richard to go up 3-1.

Binghamton padded the lead with four more runs in the top of the sixth inning. McIver drew a bases-loaded walk and one batter later, Richard hit a two-run single. McIver then scored the final run of the frame on a fielder's choice.

One inning later, Eichner made it 8-2 with a RBI double. She scored one batter later on McIver's second home run of the game.

Central Connecticut came back with six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Eva Rentzel delivered a three-run double during that frame and later scored on a two-run home run by Kerri Dadalski.

Cara Martin, who gave up one run in 6.1 innings, improved to 4-2 with the win. Emily Sargent dropped to 6-5 with the loss.

By going 2-for-6 (.333), Harbaugh now has 172 career hits and moves into sole possession of second place all time in program history. Entering the day, she had been tied with Mollie Lehman (1997-00) at 170 hits. Jessica Phillips (2010-13) is first all time with 180 career hits. Earlier in the day, Harbaugh was named the America East Player of the Week for the third time in her career.

Binghamton hosts Niagara on Thursday in its home-opening doubleheader on Thursday at 3 p.m.

NOTE: The last time Binghamton hit back-to-back home runs came on April 20, 2014 against Hartford. Current seniors Lisa Cadogan and Taylor Chaffee were the two batters.
