Reed Gamache drove in four, sophomore center fielder
CJ Krowiak went 4-for-5 with five runs and junior left fielder
Darian Herncane belted two home runs to lead a 20-hit assault in Game 2 and Binghamton baseball (2-7) gained a doubleheader split with host VMI (6-6) Saturday afternoon at Gray-Minor Stadium. The Keydets took the opener 15-9 before BU won the nightcap 15-10.
In Game 2, BU built an early 8-1 lead and then after VMI tightened it to 11-10, the Bearcats plated four insurance runs in the ninth inning. Krowiak had a big day at the plate and on the bases. He singled in the first, second, third and ninth innings and also reached in the fifth inning, scoring all five times he reached base. Gamache started his four-RBI day with a sacrifice fly in the second, then produced an RBI double in the fifth and a two-run double in the ninth.
Herncane (3-for-5, 2 RBI) used the long ball for his damage. He ripped a one-out home run to left in the third inning and added a leadoff homer to left in the ninth - his second and third long balls of the spring. Sophomore DH
Jason Agresti went 3-for-5 with two RBI and senior third baseman
David Schanz and sophomore shortstop
Luke Tevlin each drove in a pair. Schanz had three hits and is tied with Krowiak atop BU's hitting list at .385 after nine games. Freshman right fielder
Daniel Franchi hit his first collegiate home run with one out in the third inning.
Junior reliever
Nicholas Liegi (W, 1-0) got the win after limiting VMI to two hits in 2.0 innings. Senior starter
Rob Hardy went 4.1 innings and allowed three earned runs.
In the opener, VMI scored six runs in the first two innings - all after two were out - and built a 10-3 lead en route to the comfortable win. The Keydets hit a grand slam with two out in the first and added a two-run homer in the second. They totalled nine extra-base hits in the game.
Junior first baseman
Brendan Skidmore (2-for-3, 2 RBI) hit his first two home runs of the season - solo shots in the fourth and ninth innings. Sophomore shortstop
Paul Rufo (2-for-5, 2 RBI) belted his first collegiate home run (solo) with two out in the fourth. Agresti went 2-for-5 and BU collected 11 hits but couldn't keep the Keydets off the board as four Bearcat pitchers walked seven and allowed 16 hits and 15 runs. Senior starter
Mike Bunal (0-2) took the loss.
The teams finish up the three-game weekend set with a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
