LEXINGTON, Va. - Host VMI (7-6) rallied for two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to overtake Binghamton baseball (2-8) 2-1 in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Gray-Minor Stadium.
Binghamton had snapped a scoreless tie when sophomore shortstop
Paul Rufo hit his second home run of the weekend in the top of the frame. But with two out and runners on first and third in the bottom of the 10th, VMI's No. 9 hitter hit a two-run double on a 3-2 count to end the game.
The Bearcats, who were one strike away from grabbing the series, couldn't take advantage of a strong outing from junior starter
Jake Cryts, who allowed just two hits in seven scoreless innings. Freshman reliever
Nick Gallagher (L, 0-1) pitched the final 2.2 innings.
A day after the teams combined for 49 runs in a doubleheader split, they played nine scoreless frames. VMI starter Josh Winder went the distance and struck out 10.
Rufo went 2-for-4, as did junior first baseman
Brendan Skidmore.
Sophomore center fielder
CJ Krowiak had a hit and is batting a team-best .372. He went 6-for-13 in the weekend series (.462).
The Bearcats next play a four-game set at Delaware beginning with a single game at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
