VESTAL, N.Y.—The Binghamton women's lacrosse team (4-10, 0-3 AE) was defeated today by the UMBC Retrievers (8-6, 2-2 AE) 11-10 in overtime today at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
The Bearcats fell behind 2-0 early but scored four straight goals to take the lead. First
Olivia Batista scored a highlight-reel goal: as a Binghamton shot bounced high in front of the net, Batista leapt and caught the ball in mid-air, and fired past the UMBC keeper on her way down. Next it was
Rebecca Golderman running from behind the net, spinning and firing low to tie the game. A wide open Batista then caught a
Callon Williams pass in front of the Retriever net and beat the goalie to make it 3-2.
Sophia Racciatti was next to get in on the action, scoring from the top of the fan to stretch the lead to 4-2. BU would take a 7-6 lead into the half, with Golderman,
Miriam Ghabarou (on the assist from
Tiffany Ryan), and Williams scoring the next three Bearcat goals.
Williams made it 8-6 with the first goal of the second half, but the Retrievers responded with four straight goals to make it 10-8. Williams' third goal came with 8:55 left, and made it a one-goal game. UMBC played keep-away for the next six minutes, but the Retrievers turned the ball over with 2:38. After a Binghamton shot was saved, UMBC got the ball back and again attempted to kill the clock. With just 24 seconds left,
Olivia Batista scooped up an errant UMBC pass and dished to
Kaia Gallop, who scampered down the field as the clock ticked away. Gallop was fouled with 13 seconds remaining, and awarded a free position shot. The freshman took it all the way—racing in and firing to the top-left corner—to score her first career goal, to tie the game at 10 with just ten seconds left.
Neither team scored in the first overtime period, as UMBC won the draw but could not penetrate the Binghamton defense.
Erin McNulty made two huge saves in the final four seconds of the period to force a second overtime. The Retrievers scored just 30 seconds into the second overtime to end the game.
It's the second overtime loss for the Bearcats in conference play this season, and second straight year the Retrievers have prevailed in OT. BU also narrowly missed beating New Hampshire on April 2, though the team did win a home non-conference game in overtime back on February 20 against Niagara.
Callon Williams led the team with four points (3 goals, one assist), while freshmen
Olivia Batista and
Rebecca Golderman each had a pair of goals. On defense
Allie Rodgers caused two turnovers and scooped up three ground balls, while
Erin McNulty made nine saves in net.
Prior to the game the Bearcats honored the five seniors from this year's team:
Erin McNulty,
Sophia Racciatti,
Allie Rodgers,
Marissa Rose, and
Alex Szelewski.
"I think these five young women have impacted this program in many ways both on and off the field," stated head coach
Stephanie Allen. "Their freshman year was my first season as interim head coach, so these girls have been here through the thick and thin of it. From their commitment to the program, their ability perform the way that they did under pressure situations, their growth as individuals, and how they've helped start tradition and culture in this program, they really are leaving a bigger footprint here than they could ever imagine. I know they don't see the results out there in the win-loss records, but we're making progress and they've been a huge part in that process for us."
The Bearcats have three regular season games remaining, and will conclude their home schedule on Wednesday against Stony Brook.
