Softball Sweeps UMBC 6-0 and 10-2

Bearcats stretch winning streak to 10 games, move to 5-0 in AE

BALTIMORE, MD. – Senior designated hitter Griffin Mclver homered and drove in six runs, powering Binghamton (18-9, 5-0 AE) to a 6-0, 10-2 sweep at UMBC (16-19, 1-4 AE) in an America East doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. With the victories, the Bearcats extend their winning streak to a season-best 10 games.
 
McIver finished the day 3-for-5 (.600) and scored three times. She has now homered in six of the past nine games and leads the team with seven home runs for the season.
 
Senior outfielder Sydney Harbaugh was 4-for-7 (.571) with a home run. She now has 179 career hits and is just one hit away from tying Jessica Phillips (2010-13) for the all-time Binghamton program record.
 
Senior catcher Taylor Chaffee went 3-for-6 (.500). In the process, she tied her career high with a 10-game hitting streak.

Junior shortstop Crysti Eichner, meanwhile, batted a team-best 4-for-5 (.800) and scored three runs.
 
Harbaugh broke open a scoreless first game with a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning. It was her fourth home run of the season
 
One inning, later, the Bearcats scored four more times. McIver led the way with a two-run single during that frame.
 
Eichner drove in the final run on a RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning.
 
Sophomore pitcher Sarah Miller tossed 5.1 scoreless innings and improved to 9-5 on the season. She has now has pitched 14 consecutive innings without allowing a run. Jessica Holt took the loss and is now 8-7.
 
In the second game, Binghamton was down 1-0 but came up with six runs in the bottom of the first inning. McIver capped the scoring with a three-run home run.
 
Up 7-2, the Bearcats finished the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. McIver had a RBI groundout and one batter later, sophomore Kate Richard hit a two-run, walk-off homer.
 
Senior pitcher Cara Martin got the win, raising her record to 5-2. Kelly Lane was tagged with the loss, dropping her record to 3-5.
 
As a team, Binghamton pounded out 23 hits during the doublheader.
 
The two teams conclude the weekend series with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday. The originial start time of noon got pushed back an hour due to weather conditions.

NOTES: Binghamton current winning streak is its longest during its 15-year NCAA Division I era. The Bearcats posted winning streaks of eight and nine games during the 2013 season ... Chaffee also reeled off a 10-game hitting streak from March 31-April 17, 2013.
