VESTAL, N.Y. – Binghamton men's lacrosse fell behind, but made a valiant comeback attempt before dropping a 16-11 decision to #14 Stony Brook on Sunday. Seven different Bearcats scored in the America East contest on senior day at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
Down 10-3 at halftime, BU began to chip away at its deficit.
Tanner Cosens made a save early in the third and then
Matthew Kaser found
Johnny Maher for a redirect goal at the 7:51 mark. The Bearcats won the ensuing faceoff and eventually,
Zach Scaduto scored his 25
th goal of the season with 6:11 left in the third frame. Binghamton followed with a defensive stop and then Maher assisted on a terrific
Joe Licata goal. Licata caught a feed from Maher on the offensive right side and immediately flipped a shot behind his back and into the net, making it 10-6 with 2:45 to play in the quarter. BU continued its momentum with a strong possession to close out the period and hold the Seawolves scoreless in the frame.
The visitors got back on the board early in the fourth, but Kaser responded less than two minutes later, as
Thomas McAndrew set him up for his second goal of the day. Stony Brook answered with four straight goals to regain control, but Binghamton continued to battle, scoring three times in a 54-second span to make the Seawolves sweat.
Liam Reaume started the rally with a man-up goal, assisted by
Ben Kocis with 3:26 remaining. The hosts won the faceoff and Scaduto found Kaser for a goal at the 3:06 mark, cutting the deficit to 15-10. Stony Brook earned another penalty, setting up a
Sean Gilroy man-up goal with 2:30 to play. Kocis assisted on the score. The visitors forced a turnover on the next possession and eventually scored with 1:17 left as BU scrambled to regain the ball.
Stony Brook went ahead, 7-0, in the first 19 minutes of the match. Reaume, Scaduto, and Kocis each scored for the Bearcats in the second quarter as BU attempted to get back into the game. The Seawolves had answers for each though and entered the half with a seven-goal margin.
Kocis posted two goals and two assists. Scaduto and Kaser each tallied two goals and an assist, while Maher contributed a goal and two helpers. Reaume scored twice. Cosens finished with 10 saves in net.
Austin Macchi won 9-17 faceoffs. Challen Rogers and Matt Schultz each put up six points for Stony Brook (11-3, 4-1 AE).
