Baseball overtakes St. Bonaventure 4-2

Gamache goes 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, BU rallies from 2-0 down for fifth straight win

OLEAN, N.Y. - Senior second baseman Reed Gamache went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Binghamton baseball (20-20) rallied from a 2-0 hole to beat host St. Bonaventure (20-19-1) 4-2 Tuesday afternoon from Fred Handler Park. It was BU's fifth straight win and ninth in its last 11 games.

The Bearcats trailed 2-0 before scoring three runs in the sixth inning and one more in the seventh to complete the scoring. The Bonnies loaded the bases with two out in the ninth before a fly ball to left field ended the game.

The hosts opened the scoring with a two-run triple in the bottom of the third inning.

But the Bearcats responded in the sixth. Sophomore right fielder Chris McGee led off with a single. Two batters later, senior third baseman David Schanz singled and Gamache followed with a two-run double to left field, knotting the score at 2-2. Two batters later, junior left fielder Eddie Posavec delivered a two-out RBI single to left, scoring Gamache and putting BU ahead for good, 3-2.

One inning later, sophomore DH Pat Britt opened with a single and pinch runner Daniel Franchi promptly stole second. Franchi took third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore shortstop Paul Rufo and came home on a sacrifice fly by McGee.

The Bonnies made thing interesting in the ninth. After two outs, senior closer Rob Hardy gave up a single and then a pair of walks loaded the bases and put the tying run in scoring position. But Hardy (S, 4) got a fly ball to left to end the game.

Freshman Nick Gallagher (W, 3-2) went 4.0 shutout innings and allowed just one hit in relief of sophomore starter Nick Wegmann, who held St. Bonaventure in check with 4.0 innings of three-hit, 2-run ball. Each pitcher struck out three.

Schanz went 2-for-4 to join Gamache as the lone multi-hit Bearcats.

Binghamton is slated to host Cornell at 4 p.m. on Wednesday when BU will put its unblemished home record (9-0) on the line. The Bearcats are the only team in the nation still unbeaten at home.
