Women's soccer rolls over Temple 3-1

Bennett notches goal, assist; Acor and Mack score second-half goals

VESTAL, N.Y. - Senior forward Leighann Bennett notched a goal and an assist to pace Binghamton women's soccer (4-2-2) to a 3-1 win over visiting Temple (2-4) Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

Binghamton held a 15-6 shots cushion and snapped a 1-1 halftime tie with a pair of second-half tallies. The three-goal output was the program's highest in 27 games dating back to the 2014 season.

"It was a solid team victory today," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We got three goals and created a decent number of chances ...  and a lot of that came from our high pressure. When we pressure and defend like that it snowballs into everything else we do on the attack and in transition. This was a bounceback game for us today after Friday's performance. It was important to show we are resilient and tough and that we can defend our home turf. So we will take some confidence from today and try to keep that momentum going heading into Thursday's game against Bryant."

After a strong start from BU that featured precise short passing and possession, Bennett opened the scoring in the 18th minute. Freshman back Sam O'Malley made a run on the right side, cut into the middle and delivered a perfect ball over the top of the defense to Bennett near the far post. Bennett cut it back to elude her mark and drilled a seven-yard shot inside the near post for her second goal of the season.

Temple evened the game in the 36th minute when a cross to the far post was volleyed in by Kayla Cunningham from the doorstep.

But BU turned up the pressure in the second half and took the lead for good in the 55th minute. Bennett received a ball on the left, spun to beat her defender and sent a low cross into the box, where sophomore forward Jocelyn Acor collected it. Acor, took a dribble and blasted a shot to the top shelf from close range, giving BU a 2-1 lead.

In the 83rd minute, the Bearcats gained an insurance goal when senior defender Allison Mack headed in a perfect corner kick from redshirt junior Michele Galvin at the far post for her first collegiate goal.

Junior keeper Katie Hatziyianis made four saves for the Bearcats.

Binghamton hosts Bryant at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
