VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Bryant (4-4) tallied a quirky goal in the 74th minute against the run of play and pinned a 1-0 loss on Binghamton women's soccer (4-3-2) Thursday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
After controlling play for most of the second half, BU had an innocuous clear attempt 40 yards from its goal but the ball caromed off the arms of Bulldogs' freshman forward Remi Manna, who had raised them to protect her face. Manna then tracked down the rebound and broke in alone on BU's goal. After another Bearcat defender chased her down at the near post, she cut it back inside and beat junior keeper
Katie Hatziyianis low to the left corner.Â
The Bearcats took seven shots in the second half and had several good opportunities but couldn't score.
"It was a disappointing loss," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We made some hafltime adjustments which I thought shifted the game in our favor. We went with a higher pressure line and attacked them a little more. Their goal went against the run of play unfortunately ... but that's the game of soccer sometimes ... it can be cruel. We created some good opportunities but didn't capitalize at the end. We have a couple of things to focus on in training and we'll get after it next game."
Bryant held a 13-12 edge in shots. Hatziyianis made five saves.
Binghamton hosts Cornell at noon on Sunday.
