VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Cornell (3-4) scored the game-winner in the 76th minute and held off Binghamton women's soccer (4-4-2) 1-0 Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The game was BU's last non-conference contest before America East play begins.
After an infraction 40 yards out, Cornell sent a long ball into the box, where Whitney Farber redirected it off the near post. With junior keeper
Katie Hatziyianis down, Kennedy Yearby swooped in and tapped in the rebound from close range.
Binghamton pressed for the equalizer in the closing minute and nearly had it when senior forward
Leighann Bennett fed a ball across to junior back
Hannah Shankman with 13 seconds left. Shankman's volley headed toward the lower left corner was touched away by a diving Big Red keeper. The Bearcats raced over and got the ensuing corner kick into the box but time expired.
Cornell held a 13-5 shots advantage.
Hatziyianis, who ranks third in the nation in minutes played, recorded six saves, including several point-blank stops. She holds a season save percentage of .860 and a 0.76 goals against average.
"We didn't execute with the quality we wanted today," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "The game plan got away from us as well. We'll go back to the drawing board. We're in a little bit of a lull, which will happen over the course of a season. Today we had another injury in the midfield, which hurt. Everything needs to be higher quality ... our pressure, 50-50 balls and being clearner on possession. We know we're capable of playing a little better in those different elements. The good thing is everyone is 0-0 as we head into conference play. We did some good things over the course of these 10 non-conference games and we have to get back to that."
The Bearcats were already short eight players all out with injuries before adding starting freshman midfielder
Lauren Spinnato to the list. Spinnato departed the game just 15 minutes in and didn't return.Â
Binghamton opens America East play at Hartford next Sunday afternoon.
