WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Two-time reigning America East regular season champion Hartford (7-3, 1-0 AE) snapped a scoreless tie late in the first half and then scored three goals in a 10-minute span late in the game to topple Binghamton women's soccer (4-5-2, 0-1 AE) 5-0 in the conference opener for both teams Sunday afternoon at Al-Marzook Field. Â
The Hawks opened the scoring by converting a penalty kick in the 34th minute after a trip in the box. Eight minutes later, Hartford made good on a breakaway attempt and carried a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Hartford put the game away late with three goals in a 10-minute flurry, including two in a two-minute span as the clock wound down. The hosts owned a 15-2 shots advantage.
Junior keeper
Katie Hatziyianis was credited with four saves.
"We're disappointed with the effort given today," head coach
Neel Bhattacharjee said. "When playing a good opponent like Hartford you have to bring your 'A' game and we didn't do that. We showed glimpses in the first half and credit to our opponent for capitalizing on a mistake and then scoring a very nice second goal. We need to show a much more competitive mentality than what we exhibited in the second half because that wasn't the Binghamton spirit we typically have. We will move on from this and prepare ourselves better to play another good team in UNH on Thursday."
Binghamton hosts New Hampshire at 6 p.m. on Thursday at the Bearcats Sports Complex.Â
