UNH edges women's soccer 1-0

BU fires 10 shots in decisive second half but visitor goal in 32nd minute stands

VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting New Hampshire (5-4-2, 2-0 America East) tallied the game's lone goal in the 32nd minute and defeated Binghamton women's soccer (4-6-2, 0-2 AE) 1-0 Thursday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

The Wildcats scored out of a seemingly benign cross from the left side with 13:57 to play in the first half. The hard ball from Liz Lane reached the head of Gaby Dorsey just inside the box. Dorsey's looping header was tipped by BU keeper Katie Hatziyianis but the carom went off the crossbar and down over the goal line.

Binghamton stepped up its defensive position in the second half and turned it into consistent offensive possession and 10 shots over the final 45 minutes but none reached the back of the net.

The Bearcats held a 14-11 difference in shots for the game but suffered the team's fourth straight shutout loss.

"We showed glimpses in the first half tonight but we were inconsistent," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "In the second half, we had better closing speed and defending and had good control of the half for long periods of time. We just needed to be better with our decision making in the final third. I was much more pleased with our effort though ... the way we bounced back from a tough match Sunday. Now it's about getting the result."

In that second half, BU had a handful of quality scoring chances - the best coming nine minutes in when freshman midfielder Ryan Reilly collected a failed UNH clear inside the box and chipped a ball over the keeper's head toward the far corner. The shot hit the crossbar, however and was swept away from danger. Ten minutes later, Reilly struck a volley off a corner kick from redshirt junior Michele Galvin but it went just wide to the near post. Senior forward Leighann Bennett struck two balls late in the game just over the bar.

Hatziyianis made four saves, including two point-blank stops in the first half to keep BU within range.

Binghamton next travels to Long Island to face Stony Brook at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
