Men’s Soccer Plays to 1-1 Tie Against Cornell

Ovetsky scores second goal in three games

VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior midfielder Ben Ovetsky scored in the 57th minute as Binghamton (3-1-3) played to a 1-1 draw against Cornell (0-3-2) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Wednesday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The match marked the Bearcats' first home contest after five straight road contests.

With the Bearcats down 1-0, Ovetsky finished off a three-on-one break down the right side of the field. He positioned himself in the box and fired the ball into the net from close range. Sophomore midfielders Harrison Weilbacher and Conrad Nowowiejski, who started the surge downfield, were credited with the assists.

Ovetsky's goal was his second in the past three games. He is now tied for the team lead in both goals and total points (four). Weilbacher and Nowowiejski each tallied their second assist.

Seven minutes earlier, Cornell broke a scoreless tie when George Pedlow headed in a corner kick by Madison Heck. It was his first goal of the season.

Despite the Big Red's goal, junior Alejandro Cubillo stopped four shots, including a pair from close range.

After managing just a pair of shots during the first half, the Bearcats controlled possession for the remainder of the game and finished with a 10-9 shot advantage.

In the first overtime, Cornell goalkeeper Ryan Shellow stopped a breakaway to keep his team in the game. Midway through the second overtime, the Bearcats hit the right post on their best sudden-victory scoring chance.

"This match was a very difficult one for us," head coach Paul Marco said. "We didn't come out well tonight but I thought we really started to play well in the overtime period. We put some pressure on the goalkeeper, hit the post a couple of times but overall, it was a fair result."

NOTES: Weilbacher and Nowowiejski are tied with redshirt junior Charlie Novoth for the team lead with a pair of assists … sophomore midfielder Miles Burbank also has two goals and four points this season.
