Unbeaten Men's Soccer Ties No. 21 Siena 2-2

Burbank and Varkatzas net goals for Bearcats

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- Senior forward Alex Varkatzas scored in the 62nd minute as Binghamton (1-0-2) tied No. 21 Siena (1-1-1) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Friday afternoon at the Siena Turf Field. With the tie, the Bearcats are unbeaten through three matches for the first time since 2007.

With the Bearcats down 2-1, redshirt junior back Charlie Novoth took a free kick to the left of the goal. The ball was redirected by sophomore back Kevin Flesch and then fired into the net by Varkatzas. It was his first goal of the season.

For the second time this year, Binghamton scored in the opening 10 minutes of a game. Against the Saints, sophomore back Miles Burbank headed in a cross from sophomore midfielder Conrad Nowowiejski in the eighth minute, putting the Bearcats ahead 1-0. It was the first collegiate goal of Burbank's career.

The rest of the first half was scoreless but Siena ripped off two goals in a span of just 50 seconds to take a 2-1 lead in the 53rd minute. Alexander Sie Tejera tied the game on a penalty kick and Sie Crisafulli put the Saints ahead when he netted his second goal of the season.

Following Vartkatzas' goal, the Bearcats had the momentum for the rest of the match. In the two overtime periods, they outshot the Saints 4-0.

"Our guys played well tonight," head coach Paul Marco said. "We had a dip early in the second half when Siena got both their goals but after that, we finished the match very strong. We got a great goal early in the game and controlled play in the overtime."

For the game, Binghamton held a 17-16 shot advantage.

Although the Bearcats have settled for ties in their past two games -- both on the road -- the caliber of their opponents has been impressive. In addition to Siena, Binghamton's 0-0 tie against George Washington on Monday afternoon came against a squad that is the defending Atlantic 10 conference regular-season champions.

Siena's national ranking is in the TopDrawerSoccer Top 25 Poll. The other two major national polls are the NSCAA Top 25 Poll and College Soccer News Top 30 Poll.

Up next for Binghamton is a Monday night game at Manhattan. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.

NOTES: Binghamton started the 2007 season a perfect 5-0-0, winning each match by a 1-0 score. In Binghamton's past three games against nationally-ranked opponents, it has gone 1-0-2. After tying then seventh-ranked UMBC 0-0 on October 26, 2013, the Bearcats won 1-0 at No. 28 Ohio State on August 30, 2015 ... dating back to last season, Binghamton is 2-1-2 in its past five road games.
