Men’s Soccer Defeats Bucknell 1-0

Ovetsky scores in 33rd minute as Bearcats record second straight shutout victory

VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior forward Ben Ovetsky netted the game-winning goal in the 33rd minute, leading Binghamton (5-2-3) to a 1-0 win over Bucknell (2-6-2) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Tuesday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the victory, the Bearcats have now shut out their past two opponents and improve to 3-0-1 at home.

Ovestky, who is now tied for the lead with three goals and seven points, took a pass from sophomore forward Nikkos Psarras and got past the Bucknell goalkeeper. He then guided the ball into the net.

At the other end of the field, redshirt freshman goalkeeper Chris Shutler made his first career start and recorded four saves to preserve the shutout. He made a pair of back-to-back saves from close range midway through the second half.

The Bearcat starting backline of senior Zach Galluzzo, redshirt junior back Charlie Novoth, sophomore back Kevin Flesch and redshirt freshman Stephen McKenna has now taken part in five shutouts this year. In the process, Binghamton lowered its goals against average this season to 0.94.

"I am very pleased with the team performance today," head coach Paul Marco said. "Midweek games are always tough. We used a lot of energy on Saturday night's match (against Buffalo) so I wasn't sure how much ground the guys would cover but the manner they conducted themselves throughout the match was outstanding."

Bucknell held a 9-5 shot advantage.

Up next for Binghamton is the America East conference opener at No. 19 UMass Lowell on Saturday at 5 p.m.

NOTE: Psarras is tied with Ovetsky in goals and total points.
