Volleyball Tops UNH 3-1

Bearcats move to 2-1 in conference play

VESTAL, N.Y. - The Binghamton volleyball team (5-11, 2-1 AE) defeated New Hampshire (7-10, 2-1 AE) at the West Gym on Sunday. The Bearcats swept both of their opponents this weekend and served UNH their first conference loss of the season.

Binghamton won the match in four sets, 21-25, 25-23, 25-21 and 25-21.

In the first set, both teams were tied at 11 - UNH then went on to score four straight points and take a 15-11 lead. Binghamton tried to answer, but their efforts fell short. UNH took the first set 25-21.

The Wildcats got out to an early 4-0 lead in the first set, but the Bearcats quickly answered scoring five straight points of their own to take a 5-4 lead. Later in the set, with both teams tied at 20, a kill from Gaby Alicea gave the Bearcats back the lead. Binghamton then scored on a UNH attacking error and kills from Lexi LaGoy and Alicea to take a 24-20 lead. UNH hung tough though scoring three straight points to come within one point of the Bearcats. But Erin Shultz was able to capitalize on a set from Sarah Ngo and deliver a kill to end the set and tie the match 1-1.

New Hampshire again got out to an early lead in the third set, taking a 7-1 lead over the Bearcats. But once again, Binghamton battled back to a 7-7 tie. After taking a 23-19 lead later in the set, Binghamton scored their final two points on kill from Alicea to take the set and lead the match 2-1

In the fourth set, New Hampshire could not hold off the Bearcats momentum. Binghamton took a 7-2 lead quickly and never looked back - eventually taking the set 25-21.

Gaby Alicea lead the Bearcats with 23.5 points on 20 kills for the second most kills in a match in her career. Shultz added 14 kills while Kristella Morina produced 11. Sarah Ngo assisted on 45 points and recorded 13 digs. Binghamton hit .281 as a team.

Binghamton is back in action on Friday, October 6 in Baltimore Maryland when they take on UMBC.
