WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Freshman forward
Jack Muller scored six minutes into the second sudden-death overtime period, lifting Binghamton (4-5-3, 1-0-2 AE) to a 1-0 victory at Hartford (4-8-2, 0-3-0 AE) in an America East men's soccer game on Wednesday night at Al Mazook Field. The win kept the Bearcats unbeaten in conference play.
Muller, who now has three goals this season, finished off a Bearcat counterattack just over halfway through the final sudden-death period. He took a pass from junior midfield
Harrison Weilbacher and from the left side of the box, fired the ball into the lower-right corner of the net.
"Tonight was a total performance by our team," head coach
Paul Marco said. "I am very pleased with the way we approached the match. We had a great week of training and are starting to be more competitive and fighting and scraping for wins."
Offensively, Binghamton led in shots 14-8 and shots on goal 5-3.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeepers
Chris Shutler and
Alejandro Cubillo shared their second shutout in the past three games. In the last 326 minutes, the Bearcat duo have allowed just a single goal.
"Our goalkeepers were terrific tonight," Marco said. "I also thought it was the best match of the season for
Charlie Novoth,
Kevin Flesch and
Florian Orth on defense."
Binghamton heads to New Hampshire on Saturday for a 7 p.m. conference contest.
NOTES: Muller is the third Bearcat newcomer to score three goals this season. He joins sophomore forward
Haris Brkovic (four) and freshman midfielder
Noah Luescher (three) … Binghamton now has three road victories so far this year (3-3-2).
