Men’s Soccer Loses 2-1 in OT at No. 23 New Hampshire

Wildcats net game winner in 92nd minute

DURHAM, N.H. – Robin Schmidt scored the game winner in the 92nd minute, lifting No. 23 New Hampshire (9-1-3, 3-1-0 AE) to a 1-0 win over Binghamton (4-6-3, 1-1-2 AE) in an America East men's soccer game on Saturday night at Wildcat Stadium. The Bearcats entered the game as the only conference team unbeaten in league matches.

Schmidt, who finished the game with a goal and an assist, was in the right place at the right time to score the game winner. Kyle Brewster's initial shot off a corner kick hit the crossbar but Schmidt was able to finish off the play.

Binghamton forced overtime when freshman back Kurt Wesch scored an unassisted goal in the 82nd minute. He took advantage of a scramble in the box and fired the ball into the net from close range. It was his second goal of the season.

After a scoreless first half, Schmidt assisted on the game's first goal in the 52nd minute. He passed the ball to Antonio Colacchi who fired a shot from 22 yards out into the upper left corner of the net. Robin Schmidt was credited with the assist.

The Wildcats, who came into the game having only allowed four goals all season, held Binghamton to just four shots. The Bearcats were on the offensive side of the field for stretches of the game but New Hampshire was able to keep the Bearcats out of the box.

"I was proud of how our team got back into the match," head coach Paul Marco said. "We increased our energy and our grit and got the game-tying goal. But give New Hampshire credit. They are a very good team and protected the box very well."

The final shot count was 19-4 New Hampshire. Redshirt sophomore goalkeepers Chris Shutler and Alejandro Cubillo combined to make eight saves.

Binghamton heads to Bucknell on Tuesday for a 7 p.m non-conference match.
