Volleyball Beats Stony Brook, Clinches Spot in AE Tourney

Bearcats top Seawolves 3-1 to finish second in the America East

STONY BROOK, N.Y - The Binghamton volleyball team (11-14, 8-4 AE) defeated Stony Brook (16-12, 6-6 AE) 3-1 on Sunday afternoon to close out the regular season. The win secured the Bearcats a second place finish in the America East and a spot in the conference tournament. Binghamton will play in the No 2. vs. No 3 game on Friday in Albany. 

Stony Brook won the first set 17-25, Binghamton then took the next three sets 25-13, 25-23 and 25-21.

The Seawolves got out to a 23-15 lead in the first set after capitalizing on a handful of Bearcat errors. Stony Brook ended the set with two kills to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Binghamton came back on fire in the second set. After taking a 22-7 lead, Binghamton scored their final three points on kills by Gaby Alicea to tie the match at 1.

In the third set both teams went point-for-point until the Bearcats took a 24-22 advantage on a service ace from Sarah Ngo. Alicea again ended the game with a big kill and the Bearcats took a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the final set, Stony Brook got out to an early lead. Binghamton battled back though, tying the game at 17 before taking a 20-18 lead. The Bearcats scored their final five points on four kills and another service ace from Ngo to win the match 3-1.

Alicea led the Bearcats with 23 points on 20 kills and 16 digs, just one kill shy of her career-high. Alicea's 20 kills and only two errors produced a season-high .419 hitting percentage. Erin Shultz posted 11 kills and Lexi LaGoy added nine. Setter Sarah Ngo posted a double-double with 43 assists and 14 digs. Freshman Samantha Gioiosa led Binghamton with 18 digs.

The Bearcats will face  No. 3 New Hampshire at Albany on Friday, November 17 in the America East semifinal match. The contest is set for a 4 p.m. start.
