Men's basketball edged by UNH 63-55

Rose scores career-high 21 points but Wildcats rally in second half

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton men's basketball (12-16, 3-10 America East) led for more than 32 minutes of the game before visiting New Hampshire (15-11, 6-6 AE) rallied for a 63-55 win Sunday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center.

The Bearcats began the game with a 29-8 run and seemed to be in control throughout before UNH starting chipping away at the lead. The Wildcats ended the first half with an 11-4 run to bring their deficit to single digits, 36-27.

In the second half, BU managed only five field goals (5-21) and UNH standout Tanner Leissner scored 18 of his game-high 27 points to lift the visitors. The Bearcats' final lead came after redshirt junior guard Yosef Yacob drove in for a layup that gave BU a 48-47 lead with 7:24 left. But UNH ran off a 14-4 stretch that featured seven free throws, four by Leissner.

Sophomore guard Timmy Rose scored a career-high 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Rose knocked down a three-pointer from the top of the key with 4:46 left to keep it a one-possession game with BU down, 54-51. A free throw from junior forward Dusan Perovic brought the Bearcats to within one, 54-52, with 3:02 left. But UNH made 8-of-8 free throws in the final 1:02 and BU misfired on four of its final five shots to seal its doom.

Sophomore center Thomas Bruce added eight points, six rebounds and two blocks while managing foul trouble. Whistles plagued the Bearcats, who were called for 22 fouls. Already down a big man (Bobby Ahearn) and another playing under the weather (Willie Rodriguez), BU had to juggle subs frequently as Bruce, Perovic and senior John Rinaldi all were saddled with foul trouble.

Binghamton next plays Feb. 18 at Stony Brook.
