Women’s Basketball Loses 76-69 At First-Place New Hampshire

Carmody nets season-best 18 points, Watkins adds 17 points

DURHAM, N.H. – The Binghamton women's basketball team (12-14, 7-6 AE) was defeated 76-69 at conference-leading New Hampshire (21-4, 11-1 AE) in an America East game on Sunday afternoon at Lundholm Gym.

Sophomore forward Rebecca Carmody led the Bearcats with a season-high 18 points. She went 6-for-14 from the field as well as a perfect 6-for-6 from the free line. Junior guard Imani Watkins finished with 17 points while freshman guard Carly Boland chipped in 10 points.

The Wildcats came into the game ranked first in the conference in scoring defense. Binghamton, however, shot 41 percent for the game (22-of-51) and nailed seven of its 15 three-point attempts.

The lead swung back and fourth for much of the first half. Binghamton took its biggest lead at 32-28 when Carmody converted a fast-break layup with 2:28 left in the second period.

New Hampshire, however, scored the final seven points before the half to go up 35-32. Carlie Pogue, who finished with a game-high 32 points and 17 rebounds, scored four of her points during that stretch.

In the third period, New Hampshire appeared to take command of the game, going up 56-41 on a three pointer by Pogue with 3:23 remaining. The Bearcats trimmed the deficit to 58-50 on a three pointer by Boland with 49 seconds remaining.

Carmody brough the Bearcats to within 65-61 when she sank a pair of free throws with 6:35 left in regulation. The Wildcats, however, were able to maintain their lead and sank six free throws over the final 1:18 of the game.

"I was proud of how we battled back in the fourth period," head coach Linda Cimino. "Carlie Pogue was obviously the difference in the game today. She is a great player. We did a good job getting to the free throw line but struggled in the fourth period with making them,"

Kristen Anderson added 13 points in the winning effort while Brittany Lai had 12 points. New Hampshire shot 52 percent for the game (26-of-50).

Binghamton scored 22 of its points in the paint and had 20 of its points off turnovers.

The Bearcats return home to face Stony Brook this coming Saturday at 4 p.m.
