ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Host New Mexico (3-0) scored seven runs - four unearned - in the third inning and went on to defeat Binghamton baseball (0-3) 11-4 Sunday afternoon at Santa Ana Star Field.
The Lobos (15) and Bearcats (12) combined for 27 hits and played an even game the rest of the way after the big third inning for UNM, the Mountain West Conference favorite who is 'receiving votes' in the latest
USA Today Coaches' Poll.
"This weekend was a great test and challenge for our guys," head coach
Tim Sinicki said. "We learned a lot about our team over the course of the series and have a lot to clean up before our upcoming games against Toledo and Richmond."
New Mexico led 1-0 before tallying the seven runs on seven hits in the third. The key blows were a two-run home run and a two-run double. Two Bearcat errors kept the inning alive.
Down 8-0, BU got a run back in the sixth when sophomore third baseman
Justin Yurchak led off with a double down the left field line and scored on an RBI single through the right side by senior first baseman
Brendan Skidmore. But still threatening with two on and one out, BU hit into an inning-ending double play.
The Lobos added on in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double and a two-run home run - their eighth of the series.
The Bearcats plated three runs in the eighth to finish the scoring. Yurchak got things going again with a leadoff single. Senior outfielder
Eddie Posavec drew a one-out walk and junior catcher
Jason Agresti singled to load the bases. Junior designated hitter
Pat Britt hit a two-run single through the right side and then senior second baseman
Henry Pellicciotti followed with an RBI single down the left field line.
Binghamton left 11 runners stranded in the game.
Yurchak went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. He hit .615 (8-for-13) in the series. Agresti went 3-for-4 and Britt had a pair of RBIs.
Binghamton next travels to Richmond, Va. to face Toledo on Friday and Saturday and the host Spiders on Sunday. Â
